The future's bright, the future's orange. Oranges are not the only fruit. Orange is the new black. Orange you glad I didn't say apple again?
Orange, with its silly, squelchy sound, is a word that for a long time has occupied the public consciousness - and orange the colour is increasingly the hot interior trend of today.
Orange as a colour has a wide variety of connotations . It is universally seen as whacky, zany and fun. It has a long political history as the emblem of the Dutch House of Orange who were hugely influential in the 16th and 17th centuries (even taking over the throne of Britain in the Glorious Revolution.) The reason that carrots were originally dyed orange (from their natural purple) was to promote the Dutch. This is absolutely true, and quite ridiculous - further adding to the mythos of orange as a deeply silly color.
Households are increasingly looking to orange as a colour to inject a bit of fun into their homes and interiors. It also helps that orange's complementary colour is the ubiquitous blue - an orange light against a blue wall makes both colours stand out and adds a bit of zip. Orange can also be used more subtly, set against "Millenial Pink" or peachy tones - or with cream for a relaxed 70's vibe.
Let's bust some orange myths. The idea that nothing rhymes with orange is only based on an absurdly pedantic definition of the word "rhyme. " If you make an effort with pronunciation then any of "losenge," "door hinge," "forage" or - at a stretch - "Norwich" - could rhyme with orange. Try it! Finally, is the fruit named after the colour, or the colour named after the fruit? As it turns out, this one chicken/egg dilemma that it turns out is actually solvable: the fruit came first. The fruit, in turn, is named after the ancient Sanskrit word for an orange grove - Naranja.
