Vintage wall sconce lighting dates back rather further than anyone might imagine. In fact, most of what might be called ‘vintage’ is technically ‘antique’ (old than 100 years). Where do wall sconces come from and why are they still popular today? You might be surprised at just how far back they go.

A wall sconce is a specific type of wall light that only uses the wall for support, so there is no base that sits on the floor. Although the light on these wall lights usually points upwards, they can sometimes be angled in other directions. The very first sconces actually date back to medieval times, when they were used to hold candles. These sconces would often be detachable (there was no need for them to be wired in, after all!) and could therefore have a double use as a torch. Although more commonly found in the homes of the nobility as they would have been expensive, peasants may have made their own, cheaper versions.
Originally these sconces would have been made of iron, but as time passed they started to be made in silver and porcelain. When electricity was first installed in people’s homes, the idea that these kinds of vintage wall lights could be used was popular. This is because many people would already have had sconces installed on their walls. All they needed to do to have electric light was to exchange a candle sconce for an electric one. The result would have meant that very little disruption (once the initial electrical cabling was installed) would occur.
