Choosing pendant lights for a kitchen island sounds simple, but getting the number, size, spacing and proportions right can make a surprisingly big difference to how your kitchen looks and feels.
For many kitchen islands, three pendant lights are the perfect choice. They create a lovely sense of balance and rhythm, while providing practical lighting across the whole island.

How many pendant lights should you have over a kitchen island?
Three pendant lights often look better over a kitchen island than two because they create a more balanced visual rhythm.

As a general guide:

· 8–10 ft island: three pendant lights are often the sweet spot.
· 10 ft+ island: three or four pendant lights may work, depending on the size and style of the lights.
Of course, there are no hard-and-fast rules. The size and shape of your pendant lights are just as important as the size of the island.
For me, there is also something about using three lights that simply feels right. Perhaps it's the visual rhythm — or perhaps it's a little bit of Feng Shui — but two lights over an island don't always feel quite as harmonious as three.
Getting the spacing right
One of the most important things to get right is the position of the pendant lights.
You want the three lights to be evenly spaced and centred over the island, rather than having the outside lights hanging too close to the ends.
Start by deciding how much space you want between the outside pendant and the end of the island. Once you know the overall area you want the three lights to occupy, you can work out the spacing between their centres.
The aim is for the three pendants to feel as though they belong to the island as a whole, rather than looking like three lights that have simply been placed above it.
And don't forget to consider the practical side too. You want enough light to illuminate the work surface, without the pendants getting in the way of people sitting or standing at the island.
What size pendant lights should you choose?
Once you've worked out the position of the three lights, you can start thinking about size and proportion.
If you have a particularly long kitchen island, you have more scope for larger pendant lights. A wider pendant can create a strong focal point without looking oversized.

For kitchen island lighting, I particularly love glass pendant lights.
Glass has a timeless quality that works beautifully in both contemporary and classic kitchens. It allows the light to spread through the room while keeping the overall appearance relatively light and elegant.
There is also a practical advantage.
Material shades can be more difficult to keep clean in a kitchen, whereas glass is much easier to wipe down. And because the kitchen is such an important working area of the home, I always recommend choosing lighting that combines beauty with practicality.

During the day, you may want bright, practical task lighting while preparing food or doing homework. In the evening, you can dim the lights to create a softer, warmer atmosphere when you're entertaining or sitting around the island.

Choosing three pendant lights for your kitchen
When choosing your three pendant lights, think about:

· The size of each pendant
· The spacing between the lights
· The height of your ceiling

And don't underestimate the importance of proportions.
A kitchen island is usually one of the largest pieces of furniture in the room, so it can easily handle beautiful, substantial lighting. Equally, putting three very large pendants over a small island can make the room feel crowded.
One trick I often recommend is making cardboard cut-outs of the pendant lights you're considering. Hang them temporarily above the island, at approximately the height you expect the finished lights to sit, and live with them for a little while.
It is amazing how much easier it is to judge the proportions when you can actually see and feel how the shapes hold the space.
