Choosing clear, ribbed or coloured glass pendant lights

Start with how much of the bulb you want to see. With a clear glass pendant light, the bulb is on full display, so make it part of the design and choose a decorative bulb. We love the openness of clear glass pendant lights where a kitchen looks through to a garden or another room.

A ribbed glass pendant light brings more texture and breaks up the view of the bulb. Browse our ribbed glass pendant lights if you prefer that extra detail. Smoked and coloured shades can give the fitting a stronger presence even when it is switched off. They do not automatically make the light softer or warmer; the bulb and the shade together determine the effect.

Our guide to choosing glass shades explores the differences. Choose the glass for the way you want the room to feel, as well as the colour of the fittings around it.

Glass pendant lights for kitchens and islands

A row of glass pendants above an island can give the kitchen a striking focal point. A trio of lights is a popular choice, but this is not a strict rule. Consider the island length, shade diameter and where people sit. Two larger shades may feel more balanced than three small ones. Leave enough space between them to appreciate each shape, and check the view across the island from a seated position.

We would plan the pendants alongside the lighting you need for preparing food, rather than expecting one row to do everything. In the evening, being able to dim the pendants can help the kitchen feel part of the living space. Our kitchen pendant lights offer other styles to compare. Where a fitting will be close to cooking, this can mean the pendant gets dirty faster, so think about how easily you can reach and clean the glass.

Choosing a large glass pendant light or a smaller arrangement

A large glass pendant light can give a dining table a clear focal point while keeping the room visually open, as well as providing great lighting when entertaining. We often suggest mocking up the shade diameter with paper or cardboard before ordering. Check it against the table width and nearby furniture, then look from the doorway as well as from your usual seat. With several pendants, allow for the whole arrangement, not just one shade.

Check the minimum and maximum drop on the individual listing. Where adjustable flex or chain is supplied, your electrician can shorten it during installation. A generous ceiling height gives you more freedom, while a low ceiling naturally calls for a shorter fitting. In a bedroom, our bedroom pendant lights offer ideas for the main ceiling position. For smaller pendants beside the bed, browse bedside pendant lights and plan around the bedside table, your reading position and access to the switch.

Hand-blown glass pendant lights from our Cranbrook Collection

Our Cranbrook glass shades are hand-blown in the UK, and the fittings are made here using solid brass components. We have spent years refining the combinations, looking at how the shade, fitting and proportions work together. The result is a collection we feel just as comfortable recommending for a classic room as for a more contemporary home.

Choose from the pairings and options listed on each product page. The wider glass pendant collection includes other makers too, so manufacturing details vary. If you are deciding between sizes or finishes, call us with the dimensions of your space. We can help you compare the designs without losing sight of how you want to live in the room.

Questions about glass pendant lights

What bulbs are best for glass pendant lights?

We recommend warm LED bulbs, around 2700K. Check the fitting’s bulb cap and maximum wattage, and compare lumens to choose the brightness. With clear glass, the bulb is on show: consider a decorative filament such as a squirrel cage.

How do I clean glass pendant lights?

Dust glass pendant shades regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Switch off the light and let the fitting cool first. Follow the maker’s instructions before using cleaning products or removing a shade, especially with coloured or coated glass. Keep moisture away from electrical parts, and check that you can safely reach the fitting.

Can glass pendant lights be dimmed?

Many glass pendant lights can be dimmed, including our Brook and Hythe designs, when used with suitable dimmable bulbs. Check the individual product details and use a compatible LED dimmer. Dimming lets you change from practical light to a gentler cosy evening feel.

How high should glass pendant lights hang above a kitchen island?

Around 75–90cm between the worktop and the bottom of the shade is a useful starting point. Check the position while seated and standing: the shade should not interrupt conversation or leave you looking straight into the bulb. Adjust for the fitting’s size and your ceiling height, and agree the final position with your electrician before installation.
