Unlike wall lights that are installed indoors, outside wall lights need to be treated a little more carefully. Indoor lighting is not subject to the quite the same stringent controls (although it must still be safe). This is not something that should concern you too much, however. Whatever needs to be done is done for your own safety. After all, outside lighting is open to all the elements, and subject to a lot more wear and tear than interior lighting, and therefore should come under more intense scrutiny. One of the things you may need to consider when installing outdoor lighting is whether you should also install a transformer.
A transformer is a device that changes the voltage from one level to another. This can be life-saving, and certainly can keep your new lighting working for longer. Most wall lights are 240v, but a properly working transformer will take that down to 12v. 12v is much safer, especially considering that outside wall lights will get wet and would stop working, or cause potential fires or electric shocks otherwise. A transformer will be located in a building or in the garden itself, and all cabling will be routed through it.
